Golden Oyster Grow Log – Oct ’10

Four BRF jars (see PF tek) inoculated with around 2mL live fragmented Golden Oyster (Pleurotus citrinopileatus) liquid culture.  370mL jars used (Bonne Maman jam).

First Signs of Colonization - 6 days post-inoculation

Initial wispy signs of colonization - 6 days post-inoculation

Initial signs of colonization - 6 days post-inoculation

8 days post-inoculation

10 days post-inoculation showing metabolite formation (brown spot)

Jars fully colonized after 14 days.  Small quantities of metabolites observed in 2/4 jars (see above image).  Cakes birthed and spawned to straw (see Straw tek).

Mycelium breaking through top layer of straw - 2 days post-spawn

Signs of mycellial breakthrough - 2 days post-spawn

After 7 days, basket looks almost 100% colonized.

Full colonization of substrate - 7 days post-spawn

Surface colonization - 7 days post-spawn

Colonization of basket side - 7 days post-spawn

After 13 days post-spawn (6 days after basket was fully colonized), I moved the basket into a shotgun FC.  It was when I did this, that I discovered the first pinsets had developed.  The basket was pinning on all sides, including a large pinset that had erupted from the bottom of the basket, through one of the drainage holes.

Fully colonized basket in shotgun FC

Lid left partially off FC, with misting 2-3 times per day.  Humidity remaining around 70-75%.  Temperature around 15C (60F).

Primordia formation - day 13

Primordia starting to form individual “heads”, which will (hopefully!) become mushrooms.  I’ve noticed that some pinheads have stalled.  These will possibly continue to develop after the first harvest.
